At our EGM yesterday Adrian Forber was elected as chairman for the coming year, Kate Cross as secretary and Margaret Pusey as treasurer.

Other elected committee members were Fiona Goldsmith, John Glauert and Jean Reynolds. Individual responsibilities are still to be allocated.

Annual General Meeting will follow the lecture on Feb 1st 2023. All members are encouraged to attend.

A VISIT TO ORCHARD WYNDHAM HOUSE, WATCHET

Orchard Wyndham, near Williton in North Somerset, has been home to the Wyndham family for over 700 years: the house was already partly built by 1287, but its history goes back much further. This lovely building has gone through periods of neglect and rediscovery, each generation leaving its mark; and this cycle is responsible for the fascinatingly diverse architectural styles presented to the visitor today. Our guide will point out its features, and give us highlights of its extraordinary history. The total cost of the event is £23

TCHAIKOVSKY PART II

With Julian Williamson

Julian returns by popular request to complete his exploration of the life and music of Tchaikovsky, following on from last year's visit.

Audiences the world over have flocked to hear Tchaikovsky’s music for more than a century, but this very adulation has led to a view amongst certain critics that his work is somewhat superficial. Nothing could be further from the truth. In the second part of his talk on Tchaikovsky’s life, Julian Williamson continues the story of the master’s passionate and profound commitment to his art, resulting in an amazing fusion of Russian ideas with Western musical structures. We welcome you to our Discovery Day with coffee; a morning refreshment break is planned for about 11:30. Please bring a PACKED LUNCH which, weather permitting, can be eaten in the garden at around 1:00pm; drinks may be purchased from the bar. There will be an afternoon refreshment break around 3:00pm.

The cost of this Discovery Day, which promises to be both enjoyable and enlightening, is £25.00 per person, including tea and coffee; guests will be made most welcome.

A VISIT TO MOTTISFONT

NATIONAL TRUST PROPERTY

Wednesday, July 6th

This will be a full day outing by coach. 

Join us on a visit to this delightful National Trust property with its famous rose garden. Eight centuries of prosperity and deprivation are contained within Mottisfont’s walls, from the Augustinian priory founded here in 1201, through the 18th-century structure to the Neo-Classical redevelopment of the 1930s. Mottisfont has been host to Queen Elizabeth I; intellectuals such as Charles Darwin; the Bright Young Things; and convalescent officers from the Second World War. And now TASS!

Programme: 8:45 am: leave The 37 Club, Puriton with a short comfort break en route. 12:00 noon: arrive at Mottisfont, in time for lunch.

A guide will give us an overview on the coach, on arrival. There are two cafés serving light lunches; or picnic tables and benches are scattered around the grounds; picnicking on the lawns is not permitted. The ice cream stall will also be open. The trip allows plenty of time to visit the house, for which a guided tour may be available, and grounds - Mottisfont is famed for its glorious rose garden. Enjoy a walk by the river, or through the parkland.

4.30 pm: leave Mottisfont, arriving back at The 37 Club at approximately 7pm.

A MURDER MYSTERY NIGHT

AT THE 37 CLUB PURITON

An invitation is extended to all TASS members and friends to attend a splendid 3-course dinner to be held on Saturday 18th June in Sir Eustace's magnificent Baronial Hall, situated in the 37 Club, Puriton.

However you should be aware that in the course of the evening, MURDER AND MAYHEM will occur: are you brave enough to help reveal a dastardly killer? Can you follow the clues that culminate in a foul deed? Justice lies in YOUR hands.
Suspects will be mingling with you to be interrogated during the course of the evening, but rest assured that there is no danger to guests and that they will not intrude on your enjoyment of a memorable night of good food and wine.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

This will be a meeting on zoom, for which all members should have received the entry codes in a mailchimp communication from our chairman, Adrian. At a committee meeting yesterday a decision was made to cancel all remaining lectures in 2020. This was not a decision taken lightly: a great deal of discussion went into the process. However, it was overwhelmingly felt that we could not comply with regulations as they stand at present. Additionally it was felt that even if regulations were relaxed again, it would still be difficult for us to create an environment which we felt would guarantee safety for lecturers, members and guests and ourselves, the ccommittee members.

Also in fairness to our forthcoming lecturers it was better to make the decision now, in order to give them the maximum possible notice of cancellation.

So, with great reluctance we have to pass on this message to you that there will be no more lectures this year.

Watch this space for further announcements as to what 2021 holds for us, when we hope to see you all again in a happy and healthy atmosphere.

RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION OF THE ART OF TRISTRAM HILLIER

In November we are holding a major retrospective of the Unit One artist Tristram Hillier, who lived and worked in Somerset for almost forty years. The exhibition will feature loans from the Tate and National Galleries Scotland, among other institutions. This exhibition will run intil the 18th April 2020.

The first exhibition to survey Grayson Perry’s earliest forays into the art world will re-introduce the explosive and creative works he made between 1982 and 1994. BIRMINGHAM FRANKFURT CHRISTMAS MARKET

Leaving 37 club at 9:0am and arriving Birmingham city centre around 1:15pm via Gloucester services for a coffee break, you are then free to explore the largest authentic German Christmas market in England as well as the other attractions of the city centre. We shall leave at 6:00pm and arrive back at the 37 club about 9 - 9:30pm.

A lovely afternoon at the revamped Rural Life Museum at Glastonbury. An excellent guide and something of interest relating to Somerset life over the ages for everyone to appreciate. Strongly recommended especiall if you fance a cream tea afterwards

Another special day learning about Beethoven's middle years (the heroic period), courtesy again of Julian Williamson. Julian gave us another erudite and amusing lecture liberally interspersed with musical illustrations. Spread over four sessions with coffee, lunch and tea breaks this was another day to remember.

The day will include a tour of this historic house as well as short trip to the nearby church to hear its fascinating history.

A delicious home made teat will be served in the farmhouse kitchen and you are invited to take teat in the galleried hall, drawing room or dining room. If the weather is kind, tea may be taken in the garden.
