AMERICAN MUSEUM, BATH on Saturday 14 December 2024

The American Museum and Gardens, created in a Grade I listed building in Bath by an Anglo- American couple, Dallas Pratt and John Judkyn, opened to the public in 1961 with the twin aims of showcasing American decorative arts and dispelling stereotypes of American culture.

The Museum’s room sets feature periods of American history, with tours and workshops to explain it more clearly and to enhance the visit. In December, its Winter Wonderland is a festive, hand-crafted, Christmas experience with a stunning 18-foot fir tree and artisan decorations. Explore the fresh winter gardens, opening until 5pm to see the twilight with soft, pretty lights. Refreshments are available in The American Garden Deli, with its panoramic views over the Limpley Stoke Valley, while the Exhibition Gallery displays different links to American culture, as well as the Museum Shop, selling a variety of unique American products.

We will meet the coach in the Pier Street car park in Burnham-on-Sea at O9.15, ready to leave at 09.30. All-day parking (NOT in the B&M store car park) costs £6.10, payable via the PayByPhone app (location 801845) or in cash. The ticket machine does not accept cards.

On arrival we will divide into groups for the various tours: see over for full information. We will be leaving Bath at 4:30 pm and expect to return to Burnham at approximately 5:30 pm.

TOURS:

Admission to the Museum and participation in the museum tour, plus one specialist tour (as described below), is included in the price.

Places are limited to ten on each specialist tour (Museum regulations) and there will be two of each, making a total of 20 places/tour. If all the places are already taken on your choice of specialist tour, you will automatically be included in the alternative specialist tour. Your Museum tour will be timed accordingly.

Textile Tour

The American Museum houses a world-famous collection of textiles, embroideries, weavings, prints, including a collection of over 200 historic quilts and rugs. Conducted by a knowledgeable member of the volunteer team, you will learn about a wide variety of pieces on display in the period rooms, including fabrics, construction and social history.

Painting in America Tour

Before the Second World War, American fine art followed European styles. The Museum has examples of such early American paintings as well as an excellent collection of American folk art paintings made by decorative craftsmen turning their hands to portrait or landscape work. These artists were talented exponents of ‘limning’: taking likenesses quickly, so making them cheap enough for ordinary people to afford. While this tradition originated in Europe, in the nineteenth century it was unique to America.

Wells Cathedral, the earliest English Cathedral to be built in the Gothic style and an inspiration

to pilgrims for nearly 850 years, has unique features which distinguish it from other English

cathedrals, including its iconic West Front, the scissor arches supporting the central tower, and

one of the largest collections of historic stained glass in the country. 

The Cathedral also boasts the famous Wells Clock (believed to be the second oldest clock 

mechanism in Great Britain), a fascinating octagonal Chapter House and one of only four

chained libraries in the UK.

Our tour of the glorious stained glass in the Cathedral takes you on a journey from 1290 

through to the early 1900s. You will see glowing windows large and small (bring your

binoculars), including the magnificent 14 century Jesse window, high above the Quire.

 We will meet inside the Cathedral at 1:15 for our one-hour tour, beginning at 1:30 pm.  

Afterwards, we will proceed to The Loft for our summer cream tea, booked for 3.15 pm. The Loft

offers wonderful views of the front of Wells Cathedral and over the tranquil moat of the Bishop’s

Palace: located on the first floor, it can be reached by the stairs or lift.

We set off at 9:00 for a varied day out, first at the National Museum of Wales with its collections of magnificent drawings and sculpture spanning 500 years from across the world, including one of Europe’s best presentations of Impressionist art. The Historic Art Gallery includes art from Italy, the Netherlands and eighteenth century Britain and Wales; the Impressionist and Modern Art gallery includes French and Post Impressionism. The Applied Art Gallery shows pottery and porcelain, silver and Chinese jade. The Museum café also serves lunch.

Other nearby places of interest include Cardiff Castle (adults £15.50, seniors £12.50) which has a Castle tour at 11.00 for an extra £4.00/adults, £3.50/seniors. Pre-booking is recommended.

We leave the Museum at 13:00 for a two-part tour of the Royal Mint. This guided tour will take you through the process of minting coins and how state-of-the-art equipment forges our coins to make it one of the most secure currencies in the world. You are then free to explore the Exhibition of some of the most important artefacts in the 1100 year history of the Royal Mint.

We will be visiting Clifton Observatory in Bristol. Robert Bridges will give us an introductory talk and there will be time to explore the observatory before we have a cream tea at about 3.00. There are steep steps up to the camera obscura and down to the cave, but I am assured that there is plenty to see without attempting the steps, including their museum.

GUIDED TOUR OF FORDE ABBEY

A guided tour of Forde Abbey in Devon has been arranged for Wednesday, July 5th. This will be a visit by coach, leaving the 37 Club at 9.30. The tour of the abbey will start at 11.00. Light lunches and refreshments will be available there, or bring you own picnic to enjoy in the grounds, which will be open to us during the day. We should be back at the 37 Club around 5.30. Guests are welcome and booking forms will be available at our May lecture meeting. A VISIT TO ORCHARD WYNDHAM HOUSE, WATCHET

Orchard Wyndham, near Williton in North Somerset, has been home to the Wyndham family for over 700 years: the house was already partly built by 1287, but its history goes back much further. This lovely building has gone through periods of neglect and rediscovery, each generation leaving its mark; and this cycle is responsible for the fascinatingly diverse architectural styles presented to the visitor today. Our guide will point out its features, and give us highlights of its extraordinary history. The total cost of the event is £23

A VISIT TO MOTTISFONT

NATIONAL TRUST PROPERTY

This will be a full day outing by coach. 

Join us on a visit to this delightful National Trust property with its famous rose garden. Eight centuries of prosperity and deprivation are contained within Mottisfont’s walls, from the Augustinian priory founded here in 1201, through the 18th-century structure to the Neo-Classical redevelopment of the 1930s. Mottisfont has been host to Queen Elizabeth I; intellectuals such as Charles Darwin; the Bright Young Things; and convalescent officers from the Second World War. And now TASS!

Programme: 8:45 am: leave The 37 Club, Puriton with a short comfort break en route. 12:00 noon: arrive at Mottisfont, in time for lunch.

A guide will give us an overview on the coach, on arrival. There are two cafés serving light lunches; or picnic tables and benches are scattered around the grounds; picnicking on the lawns is not permitted. The ice cream stall will also be open. The trip allows plenty of time to visit the house, for which a guided tour may be available, and grounds - Mottisfont is famed for its glorious rose garden. Enjoy a walk by the river, or through the parkland.

4.30 pm: leave Mottisfont, arriving back at The 37 Club at approximately 7pm.

Inhabited since Doomsday, this has been called the most important house of its date in the country. The Tudor manor and 1689 Baroque wing sits in parkland with temples, follies and lakes. The house is "contents free" while undergoing restoration.

WHITCHURCH SILK MILL

This will be a full day starting from 37Club at 9.00am and returning by abou 5.45pm. We shall visit Fisherton Mill at Salisbury en route, arriving in time for coffee. This is an historic grain mill, beautifully restored with a fantastic gallery where over 200 craftspeople display their goods and a studio where a temporary display of paintings by Fiona Forbes will be on show.

We shall then proceed to Whitchurch Silk Mill in time for lunch which is included. There has been a mill here for 1000 years, carefully restored and now converted to manufacturing sliks. We will see the materials being produced, with a guided tour of the production areas and the water wheel. Needless to say there is a shop, where the products of the mill will be available for purchase should anyone be so inclined. We shall leave at 3.30, returning to 37 Club for 5.45

A personal guided tour of the castle. Sudeley is one of the castles in Britain most involved with royalty over the last 1000 years. The castle visit itself is reason enough to make the trip, but we shall also have a cream tea and the magical experience of the festival of light in the castle grounds. We shall leave 37 club by coach at 10.45, take a lunch or picnic break at Gloucester services (a revelation in motorway services if you haven't yet been there), spend the day as described and anticipate arriving at 37 club at about 8.00pm

Many of you will have visited the rural life museum at Glastonbury in the past, but did you know that it re-opened last summer after a £2.4 million redevelopement?

We have arranged a guided tour of the museum starting at 2.00 pm on August 22nd during which you will be able to discuss with our guide the contents of the museum as well as the redevelopement and perhaps future plans.

The tour will finish with afternoon tea to include tea, sandwiches, sponge cake and scones with cream, all for the very reasonable sum of ​£16, including admission to the museum.

This was a wonderful day out. The manor, court, and gardens are all superb and the gardens showed at their best today. The Club summer visit this year was to Coombe Trenchard, deep in the Devon countryside on the edge of Dartmoor.  In keeping with the summer to date, the weather was overcast and not that warm for the end of June, but mercifully, dry!

The glories of this magnificent Edwardian house were very apparent as soon as the coach pulled up at the discretely Tudor-style frontage.  Built in 1906, this has to be a supreme example of the Arts and Crafts style with beautifully proportioned rooms, rich in carvings and plasterwork and a galleried great hall featuring a "disappearing wall" which has been the subject of televison and newspaper articles.  (Intrigued? Google "Coombe Trenchard").  The present owners have spent the past nine years renovating the house to it's full glory and also taken on the huge project of clearing decades of rampant growth from the original Edwardian landscaping to reveal walls, terraces, streams, ponds and waterfalls:  an on-going project, but already a well-stocked, tranquil and interesting garden.

The other essential to complete a great day out is, of course, food!  From our arrival, when we wer welcomed with coffee, tea and home-made biscuits, through lunch with splendid ham, quiches, salads a glass of wine and fruit salad and finally tea with cakes and scones with devon cream and jam, the catering was all home produced and quite delicious:  all in all a truly enchanting and worthwhile day out.=

WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL & CHRISTMAS MARKET - A day dedicated to God and Mammon!

A coach load of members spent a hugely enjoyable day in Winchester at the end of November.

Starting with a conducted tour of the Cathedral lasting about two hours, we were guided (in three groups) by Cathedral volunteers who brought the history of the building to life with information that was interesting, informative and very entertaining. 

On being liberated into the town, members ate, explored the city and visited the fleshpots of the Christmas Market, held in the Cathedral Close: the latter provided a happy hunting ground amongst a myriad of colourful huts and stalls for the purchase of Christmas presents, winter clothing and other goodies! 

A day out to be strongly recommended to any group looking for something different.

A large group of members visited Rodmarton Manor near Tetbury in Gloucestershire in June.  This wonderful house and gardens represents the English Arts and Crafts movement at it's best and richly deserves to be number 2 in the Daily Telegraph top 10 great undiscovered House & Gardens in the Country.
Building started in 1909 by Claude & Margaret Biddulph and was completed (with a break during the First World War) in 1929, still owned and lived-in by the Biddulph family. Most of the furniture and fittings were made by local craftsmen, many working on the Estate, and the superb quality of the contents left Members awestruck, the most overwhelming reaction being "I could walk out with everything here!!"  The house itself gives a first impression of being an Elizabethan Mansion, but the interior is very liveable and welcoming.  Of particular interest are a series of fascinating appliqued embroideries made by the Rodmarton Women's Guild in the 1920's, depicting the Coronation of George VIth and various scenes of village life.
We were given a conducted tour of the house by John & Simon Biddulph, the current owner and son, followed by an excellent lunch with home-made elderflower champagne.
The Garden was developed at the same time as the building of the house and is a series of outdoor rooms each bounded by a wall or hedge, together with terraces, Orchards, lawns, paddocks, Topiary areas, leisure area and kitchen garden: we had two hours to wander around the gardens and everyone agreed that more time could easily have been spent in these beautiful surroundings - members had to be forcibly herded back onto the coach!

 

Rodmarton Manor is the supreme example of an Arts & Crafts Country House where everything was done by hand using local materials & craftsmen. Most of the furniture & fittings were made for the house in their own workshops, and appliqué wall hangings, pottery and leadwork, brass and ironwork were all designed by noted local craftspeople.  The history of the house and contents will be brought to life on our private escorted tour.

The Cotswold garden is one of Gloucestershires finest, 8 acres designed as a series of outdoor rooms, and spectacular in high summer.  We will be given a personal guided tour.

Arriving around 11.30a.m. for tea or coffee, followed by lunch of homemade assorted quiches with a choice of salads and a selection of puddings, elderflower cordial, tea & coffee (all included).

There will be time to relax in the gardens before leaving at 3.30p.m.

A walk around the Oxford Colleges

With a guide.

Woodchester Mansion is a 19th Century Victorian Gothic Masterpiece mysteriously abandoned mid-construction in 1873. Hidden in a secluded Cotswold valley, it is untouched by time and the modern world. This Grade 1 Listed Building has been saved from dereliction, but will never be completed. Visitors walk through an extraordinary architectural exhibit in which the secrets of the medieval Gothic builders and masons are laid bare. The carvings in Woodchester Mansion are among the finest of their kind in the world.Woodchester Mansion is a Grade I listed house in the Victorian Gothic style. It is absolutely unique because it is unfinished, so offers visitors the opportunity to see how a house of this period was constructed. The architect was a young local man called Benjamin Bucknall, and both he and his patron, the wealthy William Leigh, were admirers of the important French architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. There is a strong French influence in the style of the house which also makes Woodchester slightly different from other buildings of its type and time. In addition, Leigh was a perfectionist who exerted a strong and active influence on all the work he undertook, so the quality of the craftsmanship in the house is very high. Inside the house, the missing floors enable the arches holding up the roof and interior walls to be seen, and these vividly illustrate the function of the buttresses on the exterior of the building. The internal wall in the hall is pierced by three fireplaces, one on each floor, demonstrating the need for retaining arches to spread the load of the wall above. In the dining room the centering for an arch is still in place. Of the principal rooms, only the drawing room is complete, and this was finished for a visit from Cardinal Vaughan

THE VISIT TO HIGHCLERE CASTLE, BERKSHIRE. JULY, 2013 Highclere Castle has gained international reknown as the home of the television series "Downton Abbey", but, in addition to this claim to fame, it is one of England's most beautiful Victorian Castles, set in 1,000 acres of parkland. Members had a wonderful day exploring the sumptious interior of the Castle, strolling around the colourful and beautifully designed walled gardens, picnicing under the shady cedar trees or enjoying the catering in marquee and stable yard. Particularly memorable though, and the highlight of the visit for a number of members, was the spectacular Egyptian exhibition containing original artefacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered in the early 20thC by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon, and augmented with truly magnificent copies of other items from the tomb and interesting and informative narrative. Definately one to go on "potential visits" lists! Margaret Pusey, *************************************** Highclere is home to the Carnarvon family and is currently England's most famous stately home. Downtonia – a term coined by Tatler magazine. The castle sits in a shallow dip, so all one can see of it is the top half of a tower with four pinnacles and a flag, as though the Houses of Parliament have landed too heavily in a Hampshire field. They have, in a sense: Sir Charles Barry built both, starting work after Queen Victoria came to the throne and turning an earlier Georgian mansion into a castle of golden stone. Downstairs, the two big treats are the dining room, with its mighty Van Dyck portrait of King Charles I on horseback, and the library, running almost the length of the house. This is Bonneville territory, with the well-upholstered feel of a gentleman's club. Among shelves of valuable calf-bound leather books, a door of fake ones leads into the ornate music room, featuring a simple desk that once belonged to Napoleon. Another hidden door leads to an enfilade of pretty gilded-and-mirrored rooms commissioned by Almina, the wife of the fifth earl. The castle is the oldest building in the country to be inhabited by the same family who built it, containing many treasures that have been collected by the family since the 12th Century. We will be given a personal conducted tour by Charles Berkeley. The Gardens provide wonderful views of the surrounding countryside and the terraces were planted by Gertrude Jekyll at the turn of the last century. The walled garden contains a magnificent Butterfly House with many exotic species, and the Plant Centre.
